Factors that Contribute to Male Infertility
There are several factors that can contribute to male infertility. By definition male infertility is any condition which inhibits a man from reproducing. Hormonal deficiencies, defects in your reproductive system and illness can all be contributing factors. The most common problem is the production and development of sperm. A man may produce abnormal numbers of sperm or none at all. The sperm cells may be abnormally shaped or underdeveloped. Other possibilities include a defective reproductive system, illness, recent trauma, or some hormonal deficiencies.
If you suspect that you may be having problems be prepared to take a visit to your family physician and Urologist. The doctors will begin with a complete family history and examination. Then a blood test and a semen analysis will be performed. These tests allow the doctor to evaluate your sperm. They will look at the volume, concentration, structure, and movement of your sperm.
Male Sexual Health
Once the initial evaluation is completed your doctor may want to perform another set of tests in order to discover the root of the problem. As low values in any of the above categories does not necessarily mean a man is infertile, but may indicate that there is a problem with the development or delivery of the sperm. Additional testing may include a transrectal ultrasound, testicular biopsy, and a hormonal profile.
Treatment options for male infertility will depend on the specific problem that has been indicated by the tests given. Your doctors may subscribe a combination of medications or suggest a minor outpatient surgery. There are some techniques available that help assist reproduction. This includes insemination, In vitro fertilization, and sperm injections.
A final note: The American Society of Reproductive Medicine states that men make up approximately one-third of its infertility cases. The other two-thirds include women, and infertile couples. Unlike the recent past, today doctors have new technology, surgical tools, and reproductive techniques that help assist many male and female infertility problems.
